Royal Wedding Gowns Without the Royal Price Tag

I scoured images of royal weddings and found some beautiful gowns. The best part about this research is how many reasonably priced wedding gowns can be found in these same styles. And the even better thing about this is that you do not have to go to a stuffy dress designer to get a custom look. You can just jump in your car and head down Highway 78 to Azalea because we have wedding gowns that take a modern approach on some of the classics.

Here is the low-down on the high-class:

Grace Kelly’s marriage to Princes Rainier of Monaco
One of the most famous royal wedding gowns of all time is Grace Kelly’s she wore for her marriage to Princes Rainier of Monaco. This wedding gown was made from antique Valenciennes rose point lace. Twenty-five yards of silk taffeta and ninety eight yards of tulle were used to construct this truly royal ensemble. Her veil was covered with appliquéd lace lovebirds and thousands of pearls.

A much more realistic option for the modern bride would be the elegant Mori Lee Wedding Gown pictured in the middle. This gown, like Grace Kelly’s, is made with layers of tulle and lace.

If you love the lace sleeves, then the Aurora gown on the far right is a Grace Kelly look alike too. Of course, Azalea Bridal carries the modern bridal gowns pictured here.

Annemarie, Duchess of Parma and Piacenza

Lace not your style? Then check out this elegant wedding gown worn by Annemarie, Duchess of Parma and Piacenza. The crisscross v-neckline shows off her stunning neckline and the tiara draws graceful attention to the bride.

One thing to notice about royal wedding gowns is that they all seem to have sleeves. Most modern brides would not dream of sleeves on a wedding gown. Can you imagine this gown with no sleeves? Just look at the two wedding gowns below and you can see updated versions of this princess’s gown!

Marie Cavallier’s marriage to Denmark's Prince Joachim

Check out the wedding gown on the left worn by Marie Cavallier when she married Denmark's Prince Joachim. The construction of the beautiful lace sleeves of Marie’s gown is also similar to that of the middle picture of Autumn Kelly when she wed Peter Phillips in a royal ceremony.

Want this look for under a thousand dollars? Aurora makes the gown at the far right in sizes 18-32. The lace cap sleeves and sweetheart neckline add a soft romance to the gown. This is perfect for someone worried about their arms but not wanting to cover up completely.

Princess Letizia and Prince Felipe of Spain

When should I start tracking down the Wedding Gown I want?

So he finally popped the question - Congratulations! Now, when should you start tracking down the Wedding Gown you want?
We recommend at least 6 months before your wedding date.

You need to start looking for your wedding gown as soon as possible. Most “experts” say that you should start looking and purchase a gown 9-12 months in advance of your wedding date. In a normal situation, I think this is a great idea, but in reality, I would recommend at least 6 months.

Wedding Gowns have to be made once you order them. When you find the gown you like, the order is placed, and construction begins on your gown. Each designer does not have a warehouse full of wedding gowns in every size and every color combination just waiting to be shipped.

“I don’t have 6 months. What do I do?”

Don’t have 6 months? You will probably have to find a wedding gown that is available off the rack. Most wedding gowns take 3 to 4 months to order so you may still have time to go that route. Remember that most brides then usually need alterations to get the perfect fit. Azalea Bridal lets you order a gown and lets you buy their wedding gowns off the rack. We pay full price for the gowns that are often referred to as “sample” gowns and in many cases some of them have never even been tried on before. These are 100% new gowns. You can feel confidant in choosing one of Azalea’s gowns off of the rack because of this.

At Azalea Bridal, we have even helped brides find their wedding gown the DAY of their ceremony – NOT KIDDING! We really recommend that you start looking for your gown before you are driving yourself to the wedding! This is a special occasion and you generally need more focus and planning to find the gown that looks best on you. 2011 Color Trends: What Experts are saying versus what Brides are Choosing

You can read all of the “expert” opinions that speculate on 2011s color trends but what colors are Brides really choosing?

I scoured wedding blogs and made a list of 2011 colors from posts by actual Brides. Then I tallied the colors, organized them by season, and prepared this list for you below. Greens, Oranges, Pink and Chocolate Brown, and “Peacock” colors are popular all year and each takes the top spot during certain seasons.

In honor of the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, you can expect purple to be a 2011 color to honor the occasion with whether or not they actually choose purple as purple is known as a “royal” color. Even before the Royal engagement announcement came out, several brides listed “peacock colors” as their choice. These colors consist of purples, teals, and dark blues.

One underlying theme from all of the blog posts from brides that I read was to do what you want to do. So what if you are having a winter wedding and you want hot pink and yellow – do it! Your wedding is a display of your style. And if someone has something to say about your style, then they can plan their own wedding differently. (Of course, it will not be as good as yours!) Haha!

SPRING

Orange is the big spring color. Many brides are coupling orange with white or with yellow, deep pink, and red. Some are doing royal blue and orange and others are doing teal and orange.

Other spring options trending were Emerald green with Cream and Black accents, and Violet dresses with Light Blues and Light Teals. A few brides specifically mentioned Black, White and Red because, as one bride put it, who does not love NASCAR. :-)

SUMMER

All things pink seems to be the summer color for most brides. Pink and Chocolate Brown is the most popular color combination for summer 2011. Others are doing Pink and White and Hot Pink and Blue.

If the idea of pink upsets your stomach, other summer 2011 colors combos trending now are Lavender and Green, Yellow and Peacock Blue, Dark Purple and Lime Green.

FALL

All shades of Green are hot for fall options. Lime Green is being mixed with Blues and Purples as is more rustic green colors. Kelly Greens are mixing well with Watermelon Pinks and Dark Greens with Bright Yellows. And of course, Olive Greens with Chocolate Browns and Orange accents make a beautiful fall display as well.

Champagne and Wine with Mocha accents and Electric Blue with Chocolate Browns also are planned for Fall 2011.

WINTER

Dark Blues and Deep Purples. Peacock colors was used over and over. Deep teals with lots of dark blues and greens, eggplants, and navy blues.

Some brides are opting for traditional Red Cranberry colors while others are going with Ivory and Silver options.

5 LENGTHS & 7 TRAINS: Do you know the Vocabulary?

Do you know what an Intermission Length gown is or how far a Watteau Train extends? There are at least five different length styles and seven types of trains available for wedding gowns! Here is a run down of Length and Train vocabulary that you may want to know.

5 LENGTHS

Street

Street Length gowns have a hem that just covers the knees.

Intermission

Intermission Length gowns have a hem that drops halfway between the knees and ankles. This is also known as Tea-Length.

Ballet

Ballet Length gowns end near the ankles.

Floor

Floor Length gowns are the most common for traditional wedding gowns. This length just touches the floor all the way around.

Hi-Low

Hi-Low Length gowns are a combination of intermission length in the front of the gown and floor length in the back. Sometimes the back “low” length can be even longer than floor length.

7 TRAINS

Sweep Train

Sweep Trains barely sweep the floor behind the gown.

Court Train
Court Trains extend one foot beyond the sweep train.

Chapel Train
Chapel Trains extend three to four feet. This is the most common type of train length for wedding gowns.

Semi-Cathedral
Semi-Cathedral Trains extend four to six feet.

Cathedral (Monarch Train)
Cathedral Trains extend behind the gown between six and eight feet. This is used at the most formal of American weddings.

Watteau Train (wa-toe)
Watteau Trains begin at the shoulders and falls to the hemline of the gown.

Royal Cathedral
Royal Cathedral Trains extend ten feet or more. These are not common except for Royalty. Princess Diana’s Royal Cathedral Train is perhaps the most well known Wedding Gown with this type of train in current history.

How do you find a Mother Dress that looks good?

We all know that moms struggle to find a dress to wear to their daughter's wedding. Weddings can be stressful times for the people involved. Mothers get a big portion of this stress. Often, many mothers feel that their identity is changing. Until this time, they have been the primary one to look after their children. With a child’s marriage, this often changes.

Even though a mother may begin to feel her role in life is shifting from a mother with children to a mother with an empty nest, she still wants to look fabulous. Yet, it is also important to note that at this time the mother is “supposed” to take on a more classic role and move into a new realm. This is the reason that mother dresses look different from prom dresses, for example.

What we think we want and what actually looks good and is appropriate can often clash. Azalea Bridal has several Mother Dress options to fit different lifestyles, personalities, ages, and fashion styles. Look at these various Mother Dresses pictured here for example.

Each of these Dresses are appropriate for a Mother at her child’s wedding. They each reflect different styles and will fit various body types differently. These can often be worn with or without the jacket. The first dress is form fitting and shows off a mother’s in-shape figure. The second dress, our most popular, is often the most flattering on mothers. The construction with the gathers at the waist pulls everything into place and is great at hiding flaws. The third dress is a variation on the second one that really makes a voluptuous figure look glamorous. The fourth dress is great for a mom who likes a much younger style. The jacket can be worn during the ceremony (or not at all) and taken off at the reception to give a different look. A new trend we are seeing in mother dresses is in mothers wearing bridesmaid dresses instead of the traditional mother gowns. The fifth dress is actually a bridesmaid dress. Bridesmaid dresses provide a conservative, yet youthful, alternative to a traditional mother dress that some mothers prefer.

To help find the mother dress that looks best for your situation, mothers should try on lots of different styles and sizes. As you know, dresses look totally different on a body than on a hanger. Formal dresses often run small and some run very small so please do not be “freaked out” by the size that fits best. The Chianti colored dress #2 is our best seller. The cut is the most flattering on many moms and helps to accent the positives. Which is a "positive" thing!

Azalea Bridal has a selection of mother and bridesmaids dresses in sizes 0-34 in stock. Should you want a specific dress in a specific color and size that we do not have in stock, you will have to order your gown. Please keep in mind that both mother dresses and bridesmaid dresses generally take 3-4 months to create. Each dress is made at the time you order it in the size and color you request. To keep costs down, Jordan does not have a warehouse full of dresses in every size and every color just waiting to overnight to you.

Finding a formal gown can be a stressful experience but it can also be fun too. How often anymore do you really have an excuse to look really glamorous? Actually, more times than we realize!! Mother dresses are often also perfect for corporate holiday parties, formal nights on cruises, and can be worn again to celebrate anniversaries and other special events. Imagine how special it will be to wear the dress you wore to your daughter’s wedding again on your anniversary!! Or perhaps on the formal night on that cruise you have been planning!! Each Bride is an individual person with individual tastes. So why do you want the same cookie cutter dress that you have seen everywhere?

Azalea Bridal carries TWO Private Wedding Gowns Lines that are not available everywhere. These Wedding Gowns are exclusive to preferred vendors. Azalea is one of these preferred vendors.

Designers do not let boutiques advertise these dresses so we cannot provide pictures of the dresses online or even tell you online which lines they are. So Silly - We know it!! We will be glad to show you every Wedding Gown we have in the two private lines - just ask at the shop. :-) We can tell you that one is by a European designer and one is by a designer that we currently carry.

In the European designer we can order up to a size 32 but the largest we have in stock today is a 24. (We plan to order some more larger sizes soon.) They are priced between $589 and $699. In the other private designer line, they can be ordered up to a size 28. The largest we have in stock is a 20. They are priced between $699-$899.

Azalea Bridal has access to a 6 week rush Bridesmaid Dress order service!!

Regular non-rush orders for Bridesmaid Dresses take 3-4 months to arrive. When you place your order, each dress is made in the size and colors you request. There is not a big warehouse with every bridesmaid dress made in every color and size combination possible. That would be a lot of extra dresses that would go to waste and drive up the costs of the dresses so this helps to keep the prices of the bridesmaid dresses low.

We carry the stylish Jordan Bridesmaid Dress line. You should feel the fabric on these dresses! The satin, organza, and chiffon are luxurious! Check out the dresses at big box stores and then compared their picked and thin fabric to the Jordan fabric and you will be amazed. The difference in fabric is enough that it will show up in photographs. Jordan's Bridesmaid Dresses are elegant, in-style, sophisticated, and complementary to the Bride's Wedding Gown. Wonder why bridal shops do not carry Plus Size Wedding Gowns?

Everyday a bride says to us "this is the first place that I have even been able to try on a wedding gown. Other places that say they have plus sizes just tell me they can order me one." That is horrible! You HAVE to try it on to see if the cut and style works before you can order one. Why not have plus size wedding gowns in a bridal shop?

At Azalea Bridal, we do not force you to order your gown if you find the one you want in your size. We do allow you to buy our gowns off of the rack and take your gown home with you the day you find it. In many cases, Brides need to order their gown in a specific size and color requirements. Really, we do not tell you this to pressure you into buying your gown before you are ready.

The designers make each gown to order. They do not have a warehouse full of every gown in their line in every size and color combination possible. They have one made for you when you place your order. Also remember, you want to allow additional time for alterations just in case. We have a great alterations lady that we can recommend to you if needed.
If you do not have time to order, you will have fewer options and need to buy off of the rack. Azalea lets you do that!
